Life Events
To be a growing church making a growing differenceBaptism
Please note we offer Thanksgivings and Baptisms to those who live within the Parish of St Mary Great Sankey.
(We do also offer Thanksgivings and Baptisms to Parents who live outside the Parish boundary if their local Vicar is happy for the service to take place at St Mary’s.)
A list of those roads that fall within the Parish boundary can be found by linking to: Roads in Parish Please note that Chapelford is not in our parish, it is in the Parish of St. James.
*If you live within the St Mary’s Parish then please attend a 10:00 am Sunday church service and advise the person greeting you that you wish to discuss your child being Baptised or having a Thanksgiving Service. A member of the Baptism / Thanksgiving team will come and speak to you and ask you to complete an application form after the service. They will then discuss the procedure to obtain a date for your child’s Baptism/Thanksgiving.
*If you do not reside in the Parish of St Mary’s you should firstly visit your own Parish church and discuss your preference for the Baptism/Thanksgiving of your child to take place at St Mary’s Church.
Thanksgiving
What does it involve?
The three principal ingredients of the Thanksgiving Service are:
- Thanking God. As its name suggests, the whole purpose of this service is to say a heartfelt thank you to God for His wonderful gift of your child. The Vicar will say prayers on your behalf.
- Praying for your family. We will pray for your child and for any other children you may already have. We will pray especially for you as parents, in your responsibility of bringing up your child.
3. Receiving a book. You will be given a copy of one of the Gospels: a) A permanent reminder of the Thanksgiving. b) For you to read yourselves to help you understand Christ and his teaching more fully. c) For you to read to your child in a few years time when they are old enough to understand.
We encourage you to invite parents, supporting friends, family members and friends to the Thanksgiving.
Whilst we would really welcome the prospect of you and your family becoming regular worshippers with us at St Mary’s, when the option of ‘Thanksgiving’ is chosen, there is no expectation of you to become any further committed to the church family.
